The Good: Ruled by Empress Emiko Yoshino, a kind and gentle girl, after her father died. She was the only heir apparent that her ailing father and his council felt would do the kingdom good. Sadly she was put into the seat of power while still young. Her mother falling into grief and despair. The passing of the Emperor came at the worst time as the kingdom to the north-west began to move.
The Bad: Ruled by Emperor Toukai who had all competition for the throne assassinated, the country has fallen over the last several years into despair as he strove to increase his power. He believed that diversity was the downfall of society. Among those he had killed included his father, being impatient for the throne. He easily absorbed several small countries that had nothing int he way of defenses and was moving along the line of targets between himself and the lands held by Empress Yoshino.
Where it gets Ugly: Between the empires of Toukai and Yoshino lie several smaller lands, provinces with either own rulers who were sided with neither side. Yoshino was not keen to go to war with Toukai while he desired to take everything for himself and make it all as he saw fit. The cherry to his conquest would be to take over Yoshinos Empire but for now he has been picking his way through the smaller ones between their great nations. Pushing for war...or surrender from all.

While this is a fantasy room some of it is still based in reality. The main part of that, aside from things like gravity, death, etc, would be station. Women are considered beneath men unless they have proven themselves worthy of being even close to an equal. An example of a woman who has managed to get from beneath the oppression of men is Empress Yoshino. Her father is dead and she had no brothers. The only men who can even try to over-write her authority are her council and the man in charge of the troops. But the only way they could over rule her is in battle or if she is going to do something monumentally stupid. Other examples would be if a family lost any grown men and the only men alive were 10 or younger. Outside the loss of the men of the family it can be difficult to prove yourself.
